Reflexology
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is the technique of applying pressure to the feet, using the thumb and fingers,
in order to bring about a state of deep relaxation,
stimulate the body's own healing processes and help
create a sense of well-being. It is very different
from a foot massage, but you will also receive some
foot massage to warm and relax your feet.
Reflexology works on the principle that there are
reflex points on the feet that relate to every organ, gland and
body part.
The feet can be thought of as mirroring the body and
so the organs and glands etc. can be mapped onto the
feet. The left foot mirrors the left side of the
body and the right foot reflects the right side of
the
body.
Light pressure is used to work each of the points on
the feet, toes, and ankles to release tension, remove
energy blockages, release any toxins, stimulate the
circulation of blood and lymph, and promote healing
of both body and mind.
The origin
of modern reflexology
reaches
as far back in history as 5,000 years ago, where
Egyptians and Chinese are known to have used
techniques to work the feet to improve overall
health,
but reflexology in its modern form
was founded in the early 20th century, and continues
to develop today.
It is still not proven how reflexology works, but
we certainly know that energy follows paths around
the body. Nerve impulses travel along nerve fibres,
or if we look at Chinese Medicine, the belief is
that energy moves through meridian pathways.
However, there is much evidence in modern science
which confirms that our cells produce
electromagnetic fields in and around the body.
Whichever system reflexology is utilizing, working
the reflexes accesses energy communication around
the body, restores balance, and encourages healing.
Sarah can offer reflexology sessions from her
tranquil treatment room in Northam, or as a mobile
therapist covering the Bideford, Torrington,
Barnstaple area, she may be able to offer treatments
in the comfort of your own home.
What are the benefits?
While reflexology is a holistic treatment and the
reflexologist treats the whole body through the feet, the treatment
can help with specific conditions, or can act as a preventative healthcare
treatment which can help to protect the body from
future illnesses. Or you may simply want to indulge
yourself, giving yourself the chance to de-stress,
relax and revitalise the body.
Examples of conditions which may benefit from
Reflexology include asthma, skin and respiratory conditions, migraine,
IBS, constipation, PMS and menopausal problems, chronic fatigue,
back pain, sciatica, stress, insomnia, depression and anxiety.
In fact reflexology may help relieve symptoms of
most acute or chronic conditions.

The
effects may be felt at the first treatment, or
it may need several treatments for changes to
be
noticed. Depending on your aims, treatments may
be weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or you may just
come for a "top up" when you feel the need.
Who
can benefit?
Reflexology is suitable for men, women and children
of all ages. It is also a wonderful therapy to
receive during pregnancy, although it is best
avoided in the first three months of pregnancy. Children respond well as they are
naturally relaxed and their bodies are very
responsive. There are some medical conditions where
it may not be possible to carry out treatment, which
is why a full consultation is carried out before
commencing. This also allows the treatment to be
tailored to your own needs.
If you have any serious medical conditions or take
medication, it is advisable to check with your
doctor before making an appointment.
